Composition and Framing

I completed a Composition and Framing task, in which we had to take photos, based on a theme (Mine was positive/negative). We investigated a variety of composition and framing techniques that we were to use in our photos (Symmetry, Depth of Field, Framing, Space, Colour, Perspective).

My initial photos (below) focused on symmetry, the idea that both sides of the image are visually similar. This allowed me to provide both positive and negative aspects equally. I didn't however, look at many of the other techniques. Negative space is absent in all of my photos, making them look crowded, and there was no change in the depth of field, making them quite boring. In the photo with the chairs, I have used colour to represent positive and negative, as well as making the image more appealing, however in my other photos, they are very dark and quite boring.

After taking the first photos, we sat and reviewed them, picking out how we could change them and use the different techniques more successfully. In the second images, I focused much more on the techniques I didn't use in the first set. In the photo of the phone, I used depth of field to draw focus to the phone and used the rule of thirds, placing the key focus of the image somewhere other than the centre.

After completing this task, I feel I have a much better understanding of composition and framing techniques and have an idea of how I can make footage much more appealing.
