Island Records
.
Island Records is a UK Record Company, owned by Universal Music Group. It was founded in Jamaica in 1959 before moving to the UK shortly after. It has been a big part of the British music industry in the years since and whilst they do not specialise in any particular genre, have signed many big names over the years, including Bob Marley, Jessie J, Nicki Minaj and Robbie Williams. Island Records have also recently partnered with Indiegogo for an initiative called Fan Republic. Using the Indiegogo platform, artists are able to promote themselves, with the best artists receiving the opportunity to work with Island Records.Whilst there is no specific genre, many Indie Folk artists are signed to Island Records. Ben Howard, Mumford and Sons, Passenger, Of Monsters and Men, and Bombay Bicycle Club are all signed to the record company. Island Records are also responsible for the music videos for these artists.
Columbia Records
Columbia Records is an American Record Company, owned by Sony Music Entertainment. It was founded in 1888, developing from the American Graphophone company and is the oldest name in recorded sound. In 1988, Columbia Records was acquired by Sony Music Entertainment and it's influence spread across the globe.Like Island Records, there is no specific genre of artists that they sign, but are home to some of the most popular musicians in the world. AC/DC, Beyonce, Daft Punk and One Direction are all signed to Columbia Records, as well as several indie folk/rock musicians like MGMT and Foster the People.
Island Records and Columbia Records are two of the biggest Record labels in the world, especially involving all varieties of indie music, indie folk included. Through the companies various connections and subsidiaries, most mainstream indie artists are connected in some way to one, if not both of these names. As a result, we should consider the effects of these big names on the production qualities of the music and music videos, and use it to better fit the conventions when creating our own music video.
